About

The Rhode Island Anti-Sexism League (RIASL) is committed to building a grassroots, politically independent movement to fight sexism in its many forms. Our organization seeks to include members of every race, gender affiliation and sexual identity. The fight for gender equality will not be won in a day. This is a long term, multi-faceted struggle. But we believe that, together, we CAN win.

RIASL was founded on September 17th, 2011 out of the follow up workshop, “Where Do We Go From Here?” that took place after Slutwalk Providence. The idea being that while the one off day of protest and dialogue that was the Slutwalk movement was a great start, the dialogue and the action needed to continue and a new women’s movement needed a lot more work and dedication to bring about real change than what Slutwalk was offering. In time the group has evolved to embrace all forms of sexist struggle beyond that of fighting rape culture, we also focus on the LGBTQ movement, women’s reproductive rights, economic inequality, transgender rights and equality, sexism in the media and reinforced gender stereotypes in marketing towards children, and so on.
