RIASL’s very first reading group! Everyone is welcome to pick up a copy of the book and read with us! For our first reading group we have chosen Female Chauvinist Pigs by Ariel Levy: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture. “If male chauvinist pigs of years past thought of women as pieces of meat, female chauvinist pigs of today are doing them one better, making sex objects of other women -and of themselves. With a wink and a nudge, they are welcoming back strippers, porn stars and Playboy Bunnies as the heroes of post-feminist culture. Taking off your bra used to mean liberation - now it’s just the sign of another girl gone wild in her attempt to win favour from the boys. In “Female Chauvinist Pigs” journalist Ariel Levy asks the question: What’s in it for us women? In her quest for the answer, Levy interviews the college women who flash for the cameras on MTV and teenage girls raised on Paris Hilton and thongs. She talks to the high-powered women who create ‘raunch culture’, the new oinking women warriors of the corporate and entertainment worlds. And she sits down with Second Wave feminists, such as Susan Brownmiller and Erica Jong, to find out where they think women are headed today. As she explores the phenomenon of the Female Chauvinist Pig, Levy explains that these new women believe they are expressing sexual liberation and female empowerment, when really they are only conforming to stereotypes cooked long ago. Terrifically witty and wickedly intelligent, “Female Chauvinist Pigs” stands firmly in the tradition of Susan Faludi’s “Backlash” and Naomi Wolf’s “The Beauty Myth”. It is the first book of its kind to emerge in more than a dozen years - and it’s not a moment too soon.” Our first discussion of this book will take place on June 24th (so you have plenty of time to pick up a copy and dig in!) and our second discussion will take place on July 8th. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Rain Contingency Plan for Occupy Sexism tomorrow!

The original plan is to hold the rally and tabling in City Hall Park before the march.

City Hall Park is the area downtown between the ice skating rink and the Biltmore:

The schedule will look like this:

Noon - 1PM: Rally at City Hally Park

1PM-2PM - march

2PM-3PM - community potluck at SDWC

3PM-4PM - Role of Men workshop and Women in the Workplace workshop - SDWC

4PM-5PM - Clinic Defense Workshop at SDWC

5PM-??? Finding your voice writing workshop and art project at SDWC

RAIN CONTINGENCY PLAN:

We will meet in the tunnel next to the ice skating rink at noon - there will be people in City Hall Park to direct people to the tunnel - it’s right on the other side of the skating rink.

We won’t have tabling in the tunnel - and instead people will be able to go set up at the SDWC early.

We will cut the march route short and march straight from City Hall Park up to the Sarah Doyle Women’s Center.

So the rain contingency schedule looks like this:

Noon-1PM: Rally in the tunnel next to the ice skating rink

1PM-1:20ish: March up to SDWC

2PM-3PM - community potluck at SDWC

3PM-4PM - Role of Men workshop and Women in the Workplace workshop - SDWC

4PM-5PM - Clinic Defense Workshop at SDWC

5PM-??? Finding your voice writing workshop and art project at SDWC

Please join the Rhode Island Anti-Sexism this Thursday at 8PM for a showing of Miss Representation:

Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

To find out more visit here:
http://www.missrepresentation.org/

The film screening will be a fundraiser for Occupy Sexism! (Mostly to cover the costs of flyers, etc.)

$5 suggested donation - or pay what you can, but no one will be turned away from this amazing documentary!

Everyone is welcome, we hope to see you there!

THE GGB INTERNATIONAL FEMINIST PROJECT

girlsgetbusyzine:

LET’S START AN INTERNATIONAL FEMINIST PROJECT!
The idea is to create an archive of global feminists for the blog. Print off this flyer sheet, spread them around, tape them to toilet doors, stick them on sexist adverts - BASICALLY ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE!

Send your photos/scannings to girlsgetbusyzine@gmail.com to be part of international project.

Example can be found here. Come on people, get printing and designing. I want to make a zine!
